Type Design and Typography Talk at ASP Kraków

ASP Kraków Panel: Type Design and Typography Talk — Students at the Faculty of Industrial Design (WFP) engaging with the discussion on the modern type industry and the creative process.

On Tuesday morning, December 9, 2025, the Faculty of Industrial Design (WFP) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków hosted a panel discussion dedicated to typography and design. The conversation in the WFP Auditorium focused on the type industry, the practicalities of the creative process, and the future of type design.

Discussing the Future of the Type Industry

The panel was hosted by Dr. Hab. Kamil Kamysz, Prof. ASP. His insightful questions and excellent introduction set a highly engaging and professional tone for the entire event. The main guest was Dr. Roch Modrzejewski, the founder of the Kraków-based boutique studio ROHH Type Foundry. As a multidisciplinary artist and type designer, Roch shared his experiences building typefaces and navigating the design landscape across both domestic and international markets.

During the discussion, we broke down the complexities of the modern type design process. We tackled several core questions that frequently challenge young creators entering the industry:

Getting Started: Where do you even begin with typography, and how do you transition from arranging letters to actively drawing them?
System Architecture: How do you plan, design, and master a system as intricate as a modern, multi-weight font family?
Audience and Intent: Who are we actually designing for today, and how do user needs shape the final letterforms?

The Creative Process Behind High-End Type Systems

Roch shared his creative journey, from early inspirations in music and painting to graphic and web design, which eventually led to establishing his own type foundry over a decade ago. Today, with a portfolio of more than 45 expansive typeface families, his focus lies on highly technical systems leveraging advanced OpenType features and the flexibility of the variable font format. He emphasized that in a world saturated with digital content, the greatest value lies in typefaces that carry a distinct personality and a touch of unpredictability.
