The Vision Capturing the Golden Age of Italy

When Arsenale Group set out to launch the La Dolce Vita Orient Express—a first-of-its-kind luxury rail experience traversing Italy's most iconic landscapes—they needed a visual identity as evocative as the journey itself.

Reflecting the ultimate Italian aesthetic, the La Dolce Vita Orient Express showcases rich, meticulously crafted interiors rooted in the 1960s and 70s. The design language nods directly to mid-century visionaries such as Carlo Scarpa, Gio Ponti, and Ignazio Gardella, alongside the time-and-space theories of Spatialist artists like Lucio Fontana, Agostino Bonalumi, and Enrico Castellani.

The goal was to translate the raw energy of 1960s Italian design into contemporary typography. We delivered a custom type design that captures the bold character of the decade, without compromising the strict precision required by modern premium brands. The resulting luxury serif typeface combines classic proportions with sharp details—referencing both the industrial design of the era and the opulent interiors of the La Dolce Vita train carriages.

The Design Classical Proportions, Modern Asymmetry

To achieve this delicate balance of historical homage and modern sophistication, we designed a contemporary serif that bridges two distinct worlds. We merged the timeless, elegant proportions of 15th and 16th-century Italian masters with daring, mid-century modern design cues.

Sharp cuts, asymmetrical serifs, and high contrast—from these elements, we crafted a typeface that forms an integral part of the La Dolce Vita Orient Express logotype. While its primary purpose was to build the mark itself, the design works in headlines and digital communication with equal force. It delivers the elegance expected of luxury editorial fonts for magazines.

The Detail

The typeface thrives on strong, ownable details. Its defining feature is a bold clash of classic proportions, asymmetric serifs, and soft, rounded letterforms. This fusion directly channels the Italian modernist style, which served as the foundation for the entire project.

The Destination

Delivered in a Regular weight encompassing uppercase, lowercase, numerals, and essential symbols, the typeface was designed to live seamlessly alongside the legendary Orient Express mark. Today, it serves as the typographic anchor for the La Dolce Vita Orient Express brand, unifying everything from high-end collateral and digital campaigns to exclusive onboard accessories.

“Collaborating with Roch to create a custom typeface for our luxury travel & hospitality company was truly a pleasure. The communication was precise and straightforward, and Roch perfectly captured everything we needed, completing the job in a short time, meeting all deadlines, and creating a very elegant custom typeface, perfect for the message we wanted to convey.”

Crafting for the Landmarks

Beyond the train, our collaboration with Arsenale expanded to include bespoke lettering for the names of two of their premier luxury destinations: the Orient Express La Minerva hotel in Rome, and the historic Palazzo Donà Giovannelli in Venice (home to the Orient Express Venezia hotel). The custom lettering for both names was designed to honor their unique architectural heritage while maintaining the uncompromising elegance expected of the Arsenale portfolio.

The Craft of OrnamentationOrnamental Borders
for Traditional Luthier Labels

The Art of Lutherie

While extensive visual identities are built on complex systems, designing for independent creators requires a completely different kind of focus. Bilan Guitars is a leading Polish luthier workshop, building instruments that fuse structural innovation with a deep respect for tradition. To match the exceptional acoustics and build quality of their guitars, we developed a set of internal labels reflecting the same consistent attention to every detail.

A Tale of Two Generations

The workshop consists of two master luthiers: Jarosław and his son, Wojciech. The challenge was to design two distinct labels that captured their individual approaches to instrument making, while unmistakably belonging to the same heritage. Based on a deep analysis of 19th and 20th-century lutherie, the designs take on distinct forms and framing.

The father's label nods to tradition, built on a classic horizontal rectangle with a wide, richly ornate frame. The son's design, in turn, is based on a minimal square format—a rarity in historical instruments—enclosed by a precise, narrow border with a subtle echo of Art Deco. To unify the workshop's identity, both labels share the exact same typographic foundation, cleanly set in the Sayke and Qualion Neue typefaces.

Reimagining the Ornament

We bypassed ready-made digital assets in favor of the painstaking reconstruction of historical borders from old books and typographic catalogues. Each of these forms was drafted from scratch with an absolute focus on every detail. The resulting borders are crisp, clean, and elegant—a typographic reflection of Jarosław and Wojciech Bilan's workshop philosophy: a place where traditional craftsmanship seamlessly meets modernity.

“We needed a visual direction that respected the workshop’s history but still felt modern. ROHH Type flawlessly captured our luthier heritage with a sharp, current execution. Their respect for our roots and the masterfully recreated historical borders match the exact level of care we put into building our instruments.”

Our Process

Designing a typeface is a blend of art and engineering. We work closely with agencies, creative directors, and direct clients through a transparent methodology.

Analysis & Visual Direction

We begin by analyzing your brand's heritage, positioning, and technical requirements. We explore historical references, mood boards, and typographic eras to precisely define the character and message of the new typeface.

Sketches & Prototyping

The visual foundation is laid. We develop initial sketches and key letterforms (usually focusing on core characters) to establish the typeface's proportions, contrast, and distinct personality. This is where the definitive character of the design is approved.

Design & Architecture

Once the style is locked, we expand the design into a complete character set. This includes uppercase, lowercase, numerals, punctuation, and extended Latin support. Every curve and detail is refined to ensure rhythm and visual harmony across all weights and styles.

Technology & Implementation

A typeface must perform flawlessly in any environment. In this phase, we focus on technical rigor: precise kerning, optical adjustments, and coding advanced OpenType features. The final files are rigorously tested, optimized, and ready for deployment across any platform.

Guidelines & Documentation

To ensure your new typeface thrives in daily use, we build a dedicated brand book just for your team. We break down the exact rules for using the font effectively, giving you a practical, easy-to-follow framework that keeps your visual identity perfectly aligned for years to come.

Ongoing Technical Support

Digital typography is a living tool, so our partnership doesn't end at launch. We provide continuous technical support, adjustments, character additions, and rendering optimizations as your brand scales and your technical needs evolve.
